Designed and built by David Clark of DLC Design with consultation from Earl Geddes of GedLee, DUMAX was the first analyzer that measured suspension stiffness and magnet strength at each position of a cone loudspeaker's stroke. This tool aided loudspeaker engineers to optimize those parameters and troubleshoot existing drivers. This unit is one of about fifteen manufactured by DLC Design. The others were sold to speaker manufacturers and large users. This one is the primary unit used at DLC Design and included with the sale of DLC Design to Alpine. The functionality of the DUMAX was largely matched by the all electronic Klippel Analyzer designed by Wolfgang Klippel. The DUMAX was the superior tool for diagnosing poorly designed speakers, but Alpine decided to let it go. The first home it found was with audio enthusiast Dale Morse. Dale's plans changed and through SMWTMS first offered it to club members and then offered the DUMAX to the world. Speaker industry organization ALTI (Audio & Loudspeaker Technology International) Association VP Mark Beach chose to accept it for its educational value. Additionally, ALTI hopes to restore it to be operational and agreed to make the DUMAX available to SMWTMS members. |
